![]() ![]() It's a masterclass of incompetence that doesn't get nearly as much attention as it should. So congrats to the corporate geniuses who pissed away the head start that Mozilla as a project already had and then proceeded to do absolutely nothing even when it became clear that there, in fact, was tons of interest in a cross-platform framework for desktop/WIMP apps, contrary to management's insistence otherwise. Meanwhile, they sat by ineptly as ChromeOS became much more successful for the laptop form factor than FirefoxOS ever was on any device and Electron started charting its ascendancy with more and more non-mobile apps jumping aboard over time. ![]() To this day, swathes of people who were involved in this effort (some of them very prominent) are utterly convinced that it wasn't the demonstrably bad idea that it really was, but more like a case of just plain bad luck in the marketplace. ![]() Never forget that concurrent with the decision to move to a native Android UI for the non-Web parts of the mobile Firefox app (whereas previously it was using Gecko for the browser interface itself, just like on desktop), the powers that be were announcing/hyping Firefox OS-an entire mobile operating system that would "boot to Gecko", and where all apps would be required to implement the same type of UIs, a strategy that Mozilla knew had substantial downsides, since they were actively abandoning it themselves. ![]()

![]() ![]() Slide the rain diverter under the shingles and position it so that the water flows where you want it to end up.Use a flat pry bar or putty knife to lift part of the second row of shingles in the location you need to install the rain diverter.Measure the area you need to cover and cut your rain diverter to 2 feet longer than the area, or as long as you need to direct the water to a specific location. If you can’t find any, then you’ll need to fabricate your own. Unfortunately, places like Home Depot or Lowes may not carry rain diverters. Buy rain diverters online or from a local store. If you’re confident and ready to go, let’s go through the steps required to install rain diverters. If you’re not confident in the process of installing rain diverters, then consider searching online for a local roofer that offers the service. Will the water flow to an area that will cause more problems? So have you left holes in the roof that will allow mold to grow or water to seep in? You also need to consider the damage you can do to your roof from installing roof diverters and from improper installation. You need to ensure that you measure and position the rain diverter correctly to protect the area you want and have the water flow to where you want. Rain diverters are a simple product, but the installation can be a little complex. Many pre-made rain diverters come painted, so you can get a color that best matches your roof otherwise, you can get unpainted and paint it yourself. Rain diverters come precut at 10,’ but you can get them fabricated larger, and of course, you can cut 10’ strips into smaller pieces or even join multiple pieces together you just need to ensure you’ve sealed the gap between the pieces thoroughly. You can also get plastic rain diverters, often made from PVC, though any durable outside plastic material can be used. Sheet metal from various materials can be used, including stainless steel, aluminum, and copper. Rain diverters typically come in L shapes or J shapes, with the curved part being the block for the water. However, if you make your own, you need to consider if it can be painted and if it will grow mold or need maintenance or any kind. There is nothing incredibly complex about the design of a rain diverter. You can buy a variety of prebuilt rain diverters, or you can fabricate your own by cutting PVC pipe or bending sheet metal. What Types of Rain Diverter Are Available On the Market? However, even gutters have limits and can overflow as well. You need to measure how long the area is that you want to protect and then cut the roof diverter to be at least one foot longer on each side to give full coverage to the area you’re trying to protect or cut it long enough to divert to the area you want the water to flow to.īecause the roof diverter is a low-profile device, there is only so much water that it can divert at a time.ĭuring extremely heavy rain, the diverter could “overflow” and allow some water to the area that it’s protecting, which is why it’s not a complete replacement or alternative to gutters. How Does a Rain Diverter Work?Ī rain diverter is a simple device that you place on any area of your roof it has a flat bottom that is flush with the roof but a curved front that blocks water from flowing forward it directs that water to either side, or you can slant the roof diverter, so water flows primarily down one side. In areas with a lot of snow with no gutters, the diverters are a great way to stop melting snow from draining over your front door, paths, or other areas you want to keep dry. ![]() You may also install rain diverters where it’s not practical or possible to install an entire gutter system but still need to keep rainwater away from certain areas, especially doorways or away from paths. Often rain diverters will divert most rainwater to the sides of the house where gutters are installed. Rain diverters are not an alternative or a replacement for gutters, but they can be used under certain conditions, including where aesthetically you don’t want gutters to be jutting out of your house, especially on certain types of houses where it may look strange to have gutters. Rain diverters are a low-profile device to place on top of your roof at any level which will divert water flowing down your roof and away from certain areas and potentially into gutters if any are available, which can then flow to the street, garden, or even into a holding tank if you prefer. ![]() This is an ultimate resource about rain diverters so you can understand what they are, how they work, and if they would be suitable to fix the problems you’re having. Rain diverters may be an excellent option to help alleviate some of your problems. If your standard gutters don’t provide everything you need, you find gutters unappealing, or you simply can’t install gutters in certain areas. ![]() ![]() The furthest from the nest was 3.89km, where Baldy was foraging on Red Stringybark nuts, so this is the distance that we now know a Gang-gang raising chicks will at least travel to forage. Four of these were during the breeding season. ![]() We put the call out for "Baldy" sightings and received sightings at 7 different locations. One of our hollow observers(thanks Cath) alerted us to a male raising two chicks that had considerable crest damage and was easily recognisable. Consequently, little is known about their movement. * It is problematic to attach trackers and bands to Gang-Gangs so this has never happened. The average floor diameter is 20cm (range 12- 33cm). The average hollow entrance dimensions are height 22.4cm, width 15.2cm largest breeding entrance measured is 39 x 24 cms The smallest breeding hollow entrance is 10 x 7 cms. With the Canberra nest hollows, the average height in a tree is 6.5m (range 2.5 - 10m). The nest tubes are currently being trialled as part of another project. * With the help of the ACT Government nest hollow dimensions have been measured and used to guide nest tube design. * Only about a third of previously used nest hollows are used in any one year, but if a hollow is used one year there is a 50% chance of it being used the next. The clutches raised in the hot/dry and wet/cool years were similar (26 and 32 respectively). In Canberra, in two hot, dry years, no hollow bearing dead trees were utilised while in the two most recent wet and cooler years, 6 hollow bearing dead trees were utilised. They appear to be choosing nest hollows on the basis of climate experienced. Gang-gangs line their nests with bark chips of a distinctive shape and size. * At least some Gang-gang pairs will prepare multiple hollows before choosing one as a nest. The rate of predation is unknown but the project confirmed Brushtail Possums as a significant predator of eggs and chicks. Brushtail Possums are the major hollow competitor. There is an on-going project in Canberra to help determine whether sites are limiting. These results possibly suggest that at least in the Canberra area hollows are not a limiting factor and that competition from other hollow nesting such as cockatoos and parrots is not a major factor. Of these we found:ĥ% leaf-lined suggesting possum or perhaps Galah use * 216 of hollows, in the Canberra, Cooma and Tumbarumba areas, that were of interest to Gang-gangs were closely monitored. Low altitude sites, such as Campbelltown (50m) may have a breeding period 2 months in advance of that at high altitude locations, like Cooma (1000m). Hollow dimension data has been collected from most of the hollows as has fledging success rate, fledging sex ratio (0.7 females to 1male) and timing of fledging. A significant relationship was found between fledge time and altitude. * A further 25 nest hollows have been identified across much of the Gang-gang's range. Highlights of last season’s research include ![]() Gang-gang hollow checking is increasing as we approach breeding season and we ask that you keep posting sightings of where you observe Gangs-gangs looking into hollows, but particularly in remote or rural areas away from Canberra. We have 5 years of good data from Canberra but would like to compare what we are finding here with that elsewhere. We continue to learn much about Gang-gang nesting ecology and behaviour. In total we have now identified 60 nests (52 in Canberra, 2 in Campbelltown, 2 in Wombat State forest (Vic) and one near or in Moruya, Cooma, Tumbarumba and East Melbourne). Overall, metal roof purlins are a critical structural component of a metal roof. It is also important to follow the building codes and regulations in your area to ensure that your roof is structurally sound and meets the required standards. In addition to the spacing and distance details, it is important to consider the type of metal roofing, the roof slope, and the type of underlayment material when installing metal roof purlins. For roofs with heavier snow loads, the distance between purlins should be closer, around 2 feet on-center.įor lighter snow loads, the distance between purlins can be up to 4 feet on-center. The distance between metal roof purlins depends on several factors, including the type of metal roofing, the snow load in your area, and the spacing of the roof framing. The spacing of the purlins should be consistent throughout the roof, and the purlins should be installed parallel to each other. The purlins should be installed perpendicular to the roof framing and fastened securely with galvanized or welded fasteners. The installation of metal roof purlins is critical for the structural integrity of the roof. However, for roofs with heavier snow loads, the spacing should be closer, around 2 inches on-center. Typically, the recommended spacing for metal roof purlins is 3 inches to 4 inches on-center. The spacing of metal roof purlins depends on several factors, including the type of metal roofing, the snow load in your area, and the spacing of the roof framing. In this section, we will discuss the spacing, installation, and distance details of metal roof purlins. Purlins are structural components that support the roof and transfer the weight of the roof to the load-bearing walls or columns of the building. Kinda sucks. If you are planning to install a metal roof, it is important to understand the role of metal roof purlins. Looking now at the picture you didn't do any favors on fixing it usually I put 2x4 on flat on top. Usually why the require engineers on larger projects they are the ones who tell you your load factors but on smaller projects building departments have guidelines as to what will work for certain spans of lumber for the various uses. If they pass that structure and it doesn't comply with current building standards regardless of weather it slipped trough on initial approval they would be assuming responsibility because the building department is there to prevent things being built that can fail under normal calculated loads that are set for every state and region based on wind, weather, soil so forth. However, in recent years efforts were made to lower the costs of a PIV setup and expending its range of application in the above-mentioned fields. Therefore, robust and low-cost PIV techniques for flow measurements are desirable. Therefore, the high system costs are mainly preventing a further spread of PIV into industrial applications as well as undergraduate education, both being areas, where experimental flow visualization would be of great benefit. In conjunction with the synchronization and image pre-processing scheme presented herein, those cameras enable stereoscopic PIV in harsh environments and even on moving experiments. Since action cameras are intended to be used at outdoor activities, they are small, very robust and work autarkic. The setup was successfully qualified on a rotating particle pattern in a planar and stereoscopic configuration as well as on the jet of an aquarium pump. A slight detuning of the light pulsation and camera frame rate minimizes systematic errors by the rolling shutter effect and allows for the synchronization of both cameras by postprocessing without the need of hardware synchronization. A continuous wave laser or alternatively an LED was used for illumination and pulsed by a frequency generator. This paper presents the use of two low-cost action cameras for stereoscopic planar PIV. Recently, large progress was made in the development towards low-cost PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) for industrial and educational applications. ![]() ![]() ![]() When he isn't working on a computer or DIY project, he is most likely to be found camping, backpacking, or canoeing.
